JOSEPH D. GERMANO, Ph.D. | President, Germano & Associates, Inc.

Dr. Joseph D. Germano Dr. Germano received his Ph.D. and M. Phil. in Biology from Yale University, and an A.B., magna cum laude from Harvard University. He has memberships in the Estuarine Research Federation, Society of Environmental Toxicologists and Chemists (SETAC), the Pacific Estuarine Research Society, and the Western Dredging Association.

Dr. Germano is a marine ecologist with over 25 years experience in both domestic and international marine environmental monitoring programs, particularly those dealing with dredging and disposal of contaminated sediments. He has played a major role in the design and execution of monitoring programs for ocean disposal site designation studies, dredging site permit characterization studies, and post-disposal monitoring studies of both confined and unconfined aquatic disposal mounds. While his formal training is in benthic ecology, statistics, and animal-sediment-fluid interactions, he is best known for being one of the developers of the REMOTS sediment profile camera, an innovative reconnaissance tool combined with computer image analysis for performing rapid seafloor environmental assessments. He is recognized as a leading international authority on environmental impacts of ocean disposal of dredged material, has testified in congressional hearings as well as in federal and state court cases, and has served as an advisor to international governmental agencies on the environmental impacts of contaminated sediment disposal.

DAVID BROWNING | Senior Scientist, Germano & Associates, Inc.

David Browning Mr. Browning has two decades of experience in the collection, analysis and interpretation of marine environmental and geophysical data supporting monitoring and engineering studies. Mr. Browning is an expert in the use of sediment-profile imaging (SPI) for mapping dredged material deposits, physical benthic habitats and physical processes/disturbances. He has led, managed or supported dozens of SPI surveys throughout the West Coast, Alaska, and Asia and has analyzed and interpreted thousands of SPI images from diverse benthic environments. David has presented several papers on the use of SPI for assessing benthic habitats and physical processes affecting the marine seafloor.

RAYMOND VALENTE | Senior Scientist, Germano & Associates, Inc.

Raymond Valente

Mr. Valente is a senior marine scientist and project manager with over twenty years of experience in marine environmental monitoring and impact assessment. He has successfully led hundreds of investigations involving biological and chemical sampling to characterize marine and estuarine benthic habitats and to monitor the environmental impacts of dredging and dredged material disposal.
